Women In Mining Canada

Women in Mining

As an organization formed to advance the interests of women in the minerals exploration and mining sector, Women in Mining also seeks to attract and retain underrepresented groups, particularly women in the field. Like this grassroots organization, Covergalls actively encourages young women to explore opportunities in the mining and exploration sector. The advocacy comes at a crucial time. The Mining Industry Human Resources Council predicts about 146,000 workers across the country will be needed in the next decade to replace retirees and to work in new projects.

Dynamic Earth

Sudbury’s tourist attraction Dynamic Earth and Covergalls both strive to inspire children with the science in the world around them. Part of that education process involves promoting non-traditional roles like mining, engineering and geology to school aged children, particularly young women. For this purpose, Covergalls created the cartoon characters Cara Covergall and Cam Coverguy. The characters are located in the Explora Mine as a way to engage inquisitive young minds and help them identify with these roles.
